The Candace

Candace_edited_edited_edited.png

The Candace is the symbol of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. Candace was an Ethiopian Queen during Biblical times. Her name is royal as she is descended from a long line of Candaces. Candace is a dynasty name or title rather than a personal name. The name Candace is a title common to several successive queens. She is credited for bringing Christianity to her country by sending her high treasurer, the eunuch, the Jerusalem to seek information concerning the new Christianity religion. The Candaces were the first women ever to rule a country without any interruption for several hundred years. One of the most remarkable Candaces of Ethiopia reigned during the era of Alexander the Great. Other than carrying the title of Queen, she also commanded Ethiopia’s army and several times led her country into decisive battle.
